The author's experiments demonstrate that the volatilization and decomposition of polymers and long-chain compounds proceeds via a direct attack on the lattice structure by hydroxyl radicals. Furthermore, the author's work on deformation and fracture of ionic crystals shows correlation between the extent of lattice relaxation and the strength of molecular bonds, and provides new insights into the relationship between mechanical relaxation and annealing. The results have particular application to such DOD technologies as corrosion and oxidation studies and the development of materials for use in protective coatings.
