Johan Rudolf Thorbecke is de geschiedenis in gegaan als auteur van de grondwet van 1848 en als de architect van het staatkundige Huis van Thorbecke en de parlementaire democratie. Een staatsman zoals Nederland er maar weinig gehad heeft. Hij was een buitenstaander. Een halve Duitser, uit een berooide familie, lutheraan in een overwegend hervormd Nederland, filosoof in domineesland, hoogleraar in Gent tot de revolutie van 1830, compromisloos politicus met een dwingende wil.
