Hardback --- SUMMARY Aelred of Rievaulx's Vita sancti Ædwardi Regis et Confessoris was written on request of Laurence, abbot of Westminster, soon after the canonization of King Edward in 1161, and was presented to King Henry II on the occasion of the translation of the body of the saint on the 13th of October 1163. Preceded by a biography written by an anonymous author for Edward's wife, Queen Edith, and by the clearly hagiographical biography written by the prior of Westminster, Osbert of Clare, in 1138, Aelred's Vita enriched the hagiographical dossier of the saint with new miraculous episodes and was also endowed with strong political messages. It soon became the official biography of the saint and its fortune is witnessed not only by the number of manuscripts that contain the text, but also by the fact that all the successive biographies of the saint were directly or indirectly dependent on it. This first critical edition of the Vita provides a text based on the best manuscript witnesses together with the editio princeps of a versification of the Vita written by an anonymous poet few years later. Hardback --- SUMMARY Aelred de Rievaulx (1110-1167) vécut une grande partie de sa jeunesse à la cour du roi d'Écosse. Il y étudia et y vécut dans l'amitié de ceux qui l'entouraient. Toutefois, en 1133, il entra à l'Abbaye de Rievaulx, près de York, d'obédience cistercienne, filiale de l'Abbaye de Clairvaux. Après avoir exercé la charge de Maître des novices, il accéda à l'abbatiat de Reversby, maison-fille de Rievaulx dans le Lincolnshire, avant de revenir à Rievaulx, en 1146. Aelred est considéré comme un des plus importants représentants de la spiritualité monastique du XIIe siècle. Avec Bernard de Clairvaux, Guillaume de Saint-Thierry et Guerric d'Igny il fait partie de ces écrivains qui constituent la "première génération" des auteurs spirituels cisterciens. Il composa de nombreux écrits historiques, poétiques et religieux. Ses uvres se fondent sur une spiritualité d'une haute sensibilité personnelle dans lesquelles l'amitié humaine mène à l'amour de Dieu. Le travail de rassemblement et de mise en ordre des différentes pièces du corpus homilétique d'Aelred, entrepris par le frère Gaëtan Raciti (Abbaye d'Orval en Belgique), et dont sont issus antérieurement trois volumes des Opera Omnia de l'auteur (CC CM 2A, 2B et 2D), s'achève à présent par l'édition des 98 sermons de la collection de Reading, presque tous inédits et transmis par un unique manuscrit conservé aujourd'hui à Paris, le ms.
