"George Despard walks out of his house at Hampstead one evening for a game of billiards with a neighbour it is supposed, but he never returns, and no enquiry elucidates the mystery of his disappearance. That same nigh…tHubert Strange is found murdered in his studio. Some valuables are gone, also a photograph of Rhoda Despard, George's wife. A burglar and no less than two other persons are known to have visited Hubert Strange that night. Who killed him? And what relation to the crime has the bearded stranger who has taken refuge in the house of the priest Sn Felice?" The book is bound in the original recd cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine and front board and a black illustration on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some light soiling to the boards. The corners are lightly bumped and the spine ends are a bit more heavily bumped. The spine is slightly faded. The contents are tight and clean with scattered light foxing and slightly heavier foxing to the half-title and title pages and the last 2 pages of the catalogue at the end of the book. The last page of the catalogue has a tear of about 2 1/4" on the bottom edge that extends onto the spine edge. A name has been written on the front fixed endpaper.
