¶ Adrien de Witte (1850-1935), Belgian engraver of the Liège school, is a master of intimate etching whose work is distinguished by fineness of line, accuracy of modeling, and attention to modest figures and everyday details. Trained at the Liège Academy, then professor and director of the institution, he engraved from the 1870s studies of figures and animals with psychological precision and economy of means reminiscent of the best 19th-century engravers. The set brings together three original etchings, printed on large watermarked laid paper with crown (47.5 x 34.5 cm), featuring three distinct subjects: The sheep, donkey and soldier (juxtaposed, 13 x 10.5 cm), The old man seated with top hat and cane (12.5 x 8.5 cm, signed and dated 1876), and Woman busy sewing (10.5 x 7 cm, signed and dated 1876). These compositions, printed on fine margin sheets, capture with admirable sensitivity the animal, old man, and woman at work, in a realistic and nuanced style that marks Witte's early signature. The paper has fungal traces in the margin but they are far from the gutter and therefore from the printed area.
