He was initially rejected by the RAF on medical grounds, but after the outbreak of war on 3 September 1939 he was accepted.In 1941 Johnson began flying regularly and took part in the offensive sweeps over occupied Europe from 1941 to 1944. Johnson was involved in heavy aerial fighting during this period.
