Contemporary half-leather - black leather spine with four raised bands and black cloth boards with black leather corners; surface abrasions to leather and boards; wear to board edges particularly at corners; slender splitting along front joint but hinge remains firm; lesser splitting to rear joint; some rubbing/flaking to spine's gilt title lettering but otherwise still reasonably bright. Abrasions and toning to text block edges. Blue endpapers toned/foxed; author's three-line ink inscription "Mesr. Hamilton Young | Mobile | with | Respects of the author -" at top of front pastedown. Foxing/toning to interior leaves. Text block remains quite firm. The book is now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which modestly enhances shelf presence. Aaron V. Brown was the eleventh Governor of Tennessee (in office 1845-1847) and was elected to three terms to the U.S. House of Representatives from 1839 to 1845. The book was acquired from a Columbus, Mississippi estate with descent connections to attorney, legislator, and Waverley Plantation owner Col. George Hampton Young. The inscribee is likely James Hamilton Young (1832-1899) who was the sixth eldest of Col. Young's ten children. North Mississippi plantations in Monroe and Lowndes counties prospered on antebellum cotton and relied on the Tombigbee River for transporting their crops to Mobile, Alabama where European export was arranged. Hamilton Young's connection to Mobile eluded an internet search but it is certainly possible that he took up residence at the Gulf Coast city while acting as a brokering agent for Waverley cotton.
