Elle a aussi ses figures. L'une d'entre elles est un prince royal, Aage de Danemark. Officier dans l'armée danoise, ruiné par la faillite d'une banque, il contracte, en 1922, un engagement à la Légion et rejoint comme capitaine le 2e régiment étranger, à Meknès. Il fait campagne au Maroc jusqu'en 1925. Les souvenirs du prince témoignent de cette période. L'auteur raconte plus les hommes que leurs combats et décrit des scènes de la vie militaire, parfois inattendues, souvent terribles. Avec psychologie, il donne le portrait de quelques-uns de ces légionnaires, si dissemblables par leur nature et leur histoire, et pourtant indéfectiblement unis sous les flammes de la grenade. Le livre si prenant du prince Aage restitue parfaitement cette cohésion, qui confère à la Légion sa force et sa valeur. Deux jours plus tard, je me trouvais, par hasard, au mess des officiers de Sidi-bel-Abbès, quand j'aperçus, accoudé au bar - un bar, je vous jure qui n'a rien à envier ni à celui du Ritz, ni à celui du Colisée -…la plus singulière silhouette militaire qu'il m'ait été donné de rencontrer. Naturellement, l'uniforme me frappa d'abord. Impeccable, d'une coupe que n'eût certainement désavouée aucun des tailleurs à la mode de Londres, il soulignait sans l'accuser une taille et une corpulence hors de la commune mesure. L'allure un peu nonchalante et même, pourquoi ne pas le dire, assez libre pour paraître dégagée de toute empreinte professionnelle, était celle d'un grand seigneur. Son Altesse le Prince Aage de Danemark, car c'était lui, s'empressa, avec une bonne grâce toute parisienne, de me faire, en dépit de l'heure tardive, les honneurs du bâtiment. A près un silence anxieux, le Prince Aage, tout souriant, me déclara : - Comme j'aimerais écrire quelques-uns de mes souvenirs . Il me semble qu'on écrit mieux encore qu'on ne dit, contrairement à ce qu'affirme La Bruyère, Je voudrais faire comprendre ce qu'est le légionnaire, et cette part d'héroïsme qu'il maintient en lui du matin au soir à une certaine hauteur. Héroïsme sur tous les plans, dans le tragique et dans la « rigolade ». Sans doute n'est-ce pas trop présumer en inclinant à croire que les souvenirs qu'on va lire sont nés dans l'esprit du prince Aage au mess des officiers de Sidi-bel-Ahbès, ce soir-là.
