paperback. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that… encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Flier issued by the William J. Burns International Detective Agency for J. D. Austin, a prolific check forger with a long history of arrests. His ultimate fate after th…is 1922 bulletin is obscure. "J. D. Austin" was an alias. He is identified in various police records as John D. Austin or J. D. Altman. Operating across the U.S.as a bogus magazine subscription agent and traveling salesman, he used charm and false credentials to pass worthless checks to merchants and hotel managers. Prior to this notice, he had been apprehended in different states under similar fraud charges, often skipping bail or serving short sentences before moving to a new region. Because he operated across state lines before modern unified tracking databases, career "paper hangers" (check forgers) like Austin frequently shifted identities. The handwritten "2169" is a ledger number. Minor staining. His description includes: "Appearance - Jewish" Transcription: RAYMOND J. BURNS, PRES. W. SHERMAN BURNS, SEC. & TREAS. THE WILLIAM J. SPECIAL SERVICE: BURNS HOTEL PROTECTION DEPARTMENT, UNIFORMED PROTECTIVE PATROL SERVICE ________________________________________ $50.00 REWARD [Two Mugshot Photographs: Profile and Frontal View of J. D. Austin wearing a fedora hat] J. D. Austin [Facsimile Signature] PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Age: 40 Years Height: 5 ft. 8 in. Weight: 150 lbs. [Handwritten ink override over "Weight": 2169] Hair: Black Nativity: Russian Appearance: Jewish Eyes: Brown - Nose Glasses Complexion: Dark Occupation: Commercial Traveler DESCRIPTION OF WIFE: Name: Lucile Austin Age: 25 Years Height: 5 ft. 3 in. Build: Slender Hair: Blonde We have been authorized by our Client to offer a reward of $50.00 for the apprehension of J. D. Austin whose photograph and description appears above. It is alleged J. D. Austin has been traveling about the country representing himself to be an agent for the American Circulation Company, 6037 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, Calif. He is believed to be the same party who operated in the East, representing himself to be an agent for the Standard American Circulation Company, Reliable Magazine Circulation Company, American Circulation Company, Great Western Circulation Company, etc. His mode of operation is to take subscriptions for a bona fide magazine company and in payment of same secure subscribers notes which he discounts with merchants or banks. These subscriptions are never turned in to the magazine company which leaves the merchants or banks holding worthless notes against the subscribers. When last seen, J. D. Austin was traveling in a Hudson coupe, engine No. 72330, California license No. 281-709, and was accompanied by his wife and eight year old daughter. Chief of Police D. J. O'Brien, San Francisco, California, holds felony warrant for worthless check and will send officer with proper papers for Austin's return.
