Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the history of paper preservation, exploring the factors that have contributed to the deterioration of valuable records and publications over time. The author examines the impact of air pollution, specifically sulfur dioxide, on paper, demonstrating its significant role in the embrittlement and discoloration of paper. The book emphasizes the importance of controlling the library environment to minimize the exposure of records to harmful gases and pollutants. The author also explores the quality of paper itself, discussing the decline in the use of high-quality materials and the introduction of less durable fibers such as ground wood pulp. The examination of paper specimens from old books and newspapers provides concrete evidence of the detrimental effects of low-grade fibers on the longevity of printed materials. By presenting a comprehensive analysis of the causes of paper deterioration and offering practical solutions for preservation, this book serves as an invaluable resource for librarians, archivists, and anyone concerned with the preservation of cultural heritage. It underscores the critical need for proper storage conditions, environmental control, and the selection of high-quality paper to ensure the enduring legacy of written records.
