The author focuses on the effects of the National System of Education on Irish Catholics as they experienced the state-funded proselytization of their children in schools meant to be religiously neutral spaces of learning. With mountains of evidence drawn from official parliamentary inquiries, returns, and reports, and enriched with many other ecclesiastical documents and personal correspondence, the author provides a searing indictment of the severe consequences of the system. Their shocking and heart-wrenching evidence included cases in which Catholic students were denied access to instruction in their own faith in their own schools and were forced to participate in Protestant religious instruction, with Catholic teachers risking their positions and livelihoods to protect them. The author concludes that the National System of Education, designed to unite the country under a common and fair standard of instruction, has succeeded only in causing divisions, with some schools spreading state-sponsored bigotry and engaging in religious coercion instead of providing a place of learning free from fear of conversion.
