Catalogue of works acquired by the trustees of the Barber Institute from its foundation in the early-1930s to 1950; with descriptions of the works, their provenances, exhibition histories, and related literature. ppXI(1)219(1) with 94 tipped-in monochrome plates. Top edge of text-block lightly toned, and with a few faint but tan-rimmed droplet stains close to backstrip - having no effect on contents which are unmarked and in near fine condition. Original navy cloth, backstrip titled etc in gilt. Dust jacket toned at backstrip panel and lightly & patchily so at front and rear panels, and also a little damp-affected in form of two lengthy tan-edged streaks along backstrip panel, and quite densely-packed small tan-rimmed droplet-stains over part of backstrip panel and adjoining section of front panel to a width of up to 2ĵ" (5.5cm); these flaws fairly minor, not affecting appearance of dust jacket too adversely, and with no effect on binding. First published in 1846, a collection of translated historical texts on the techniques and materials employed by fresco painters at various dates from the twelfth to the eighteenth centureis, and as a guide and manual for the fresco artist. The author was part of the Royal Commission appointed to study the methods of the old masters, and the book contains the essential findings, formang a body of reliable information on the techniques and processes of fresco. Largly a facsimile of the original with spelling corrections, and a new preface and four illustrations.
