Weizsäcker 1910 sagt Jesus: 'Ich habe Mitleiden mit der Menge') - Anlass zu diesem Bedauern des Predigers und dessen Betrachtungen ganz im Sinne von christlicher Versöhnung, Nächsten- und Bruderliebe war die den katholischen Verliererkantonen des Sonderbundskrieges von den liberalen Siegern auferlegte Schuld zur Begleichung der Kriegskosten von 1847. Diese führte - abgesehen von den materiellen Nöten in den betroffenen, wenig begüterten ländlichen Ständen - auch zu allerhand Willkür, Übergriffen und Ungerechtigkeiten: "Unbelehrt durch alle Einwendungen nahm die Tagsatzung den harten und unbilligen Antrag an, den ehemaligen Sonderbundsständen die Exekutionskosten in der Höhe von 6.179.626 Schweizerfranken aufzubürden, wobei den einzelnen Kantonen gestattet wurde, auf diejenigen Individuen zurückzugreifen, 'welche sie als schuldig finden mögen'. Diese Bestimmung erwies sich als überaus verhängnisvoll, weil sie einzelne radikale Regierungen in ihrer finanziellen Notlage zu kecken Erpressungen von geistlichen Institutionen und des Hochverrats angeklagten Privatpersonen verleitete."
