He is, in fact, one of a group of seventeenth-century Gaelic poets to whom the title AOS-DANA has been attached, implying that while he had official status he is clearly to be distinguished from the professional classical bards of an earlier age . include, . the works of other Maclean poets of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries whose extant work is also so small as to make it unlikely that any of them will be published separately".
