Add to basketEditio Tertia (Third edition). Scarce Estienne edition of Pindarâs Odes â" Olympian, Pythian, Nemean, Isthmian â" with fragments of eight other major Greek lyric poets, including Alcaeus, Sappho, Anacreon, Bacchylides, Stesichorus, Simonides, Ibycus, and Alcman. This Editio Tertia of 1586 presents the Greek text with facing Lati…n translations and scholia, the fruit of Henri Estienneâs renowned classical press at Geneva. The Estienne olive tree device appears on the title. An important work of Renaissance scholarship, this edition was the principal vehicle through which Pindar and the lyric poets were read in Western Europe. Copies were used by humanists, poets, and philologists for generations. Bound in contemporary limp vellum, well worn but intact, with the textblock clean and complete. A desirable early edition of Pindar and the Greek lyric canon, from one of Europeâs most important presses. Estienneâs 1586 Editio Tertia of Pindar and the Greek lyric poets, in parallel Greek and Latin, in contemporary vellum. A landmark of Renaissance classical scholarship. Good. Vellum binding wrinkled and worn, lacking ties. Interior clean, margins ample, some light browning and minor annotations. Estienne device strong. Contemporary limp vellum, soiled and wrinkled, original sewing visible, lacking ties. Printerâs device of Henri Estienne (olive tree with motto Noli altum sapere). (illustrator).
