Ristampa completa di una pietra miliare… della ricerca linguistica italiana del Novecento, importante e apprezzato lavoro di Manlio Cortelazzo e Paolo Zolli inizialmente pubblicato tra il 1979 e il 1988. I due lessicografi veneti presero spunto dalla revisione della sezione etimologica della decima edizione del vocabolario Zingarelli (1970) per dedicarsi con rigore e impegno alla ricerca che li impegnò per un ventennio. Di circa 60000 parole in 100000 accezioni sono presentate definizione, etimologia prossima e remota con indicazione delle ipotesi e dei risultati acclarati, data della prima attestazione e molte altre informazioni, ottenute attraverso un puntiglioso lavoro di revisione critica della ricerca etimologica e linguistica del secolo precedente, volte a mettere in luce il rapporto tra storia linguistica e storia della cultura in senso lato.
