Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. vi+220+[4 plates]+[10 figures including maps] Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Volume 56, number 4 Part 2, Memoir 77. First edition. Much of the volume contains straight forward narrative history, but rewritten, as any proper ethnohistory should… be, from the native perspective. A good example is warfare. The so-called Yaqui Rebellion of 1740, occurring toward the end of 150 years of Jesuit domination in Sonora, is a reaction against Jesuit land seizures and heavy handed political machinations. During the last half of the 19th century, the Indians took a similarly bellicose turn in response to unjust Mexican territorial encroachment and de facto enslavement on the haciendas. Spaniards and Mexicans tried to justify their actions by invoking the familiar stereotype of the Yaquis as barbaric, fierce, and uncontrollably warlike. The truth was, of course, that the Indians were victimized, first by the Spanish military viewpoint that "force was the cure for all political problems". and later by the militaristic mentality of the generals who headed the hacendado society of the Mexican northwest. Spicer attempts to reorient historiography by labeling Yaqui civil disturbances as "resistance to peonage". He demonstrates not only that Yaquis were far from unified in opposition to Spanish and Mexican forces, but also that their occasional violent outbursts were a defense against powerholders with boundless political and economic ambitions. Considering all that the Yaquis have suffered, in fact, it is miraculous that they still exist. Condition: Spine sunned, previous owner's name to front wrapper, corners badly bumped else very good.
