Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 5th or later Edition. |> Don Marquis originally introduced archy the cockroach and mehitabel the cat in a newspaper column for a newspaper in 1916. At some point he ruefully said: "It would be one on me if I should be remembered longest for creating a cockroach charac…ter." But he inevitably will be, for archy's brilliant, truly delightful commentary on all phases of our life and times smacks today of the freshness of an American classic. George Herriman, (master cartoonist and creator of Krazy Kat), has seen to it that all of archy's friends and enemies, from mehitabel the cat (once incarnated in the body of cleopatra), to freddy the rat, to warty bliggens the toad, are magnificently represented. Many have called this Don Marquis' masterpiece, and, considering the number of books that Marquis authored, to say nothing of his newspaper and magazine creations, that is saying an awful lot.<| (Excerpted from the dust-jacket blurb) TITLE : archy and mehitabel AUTHOR : Don Marquis (1878 - 1937) ILLUSTRATOR : George Herriman (1880 - 1944) IMPRINT : Doubleday and Co.
