Zu seinen bekanntesten literarischen Werken zählen der 1912 veröffentlichte Roman Wiltfeber, der ewige Deutsche und die 1914 veröffentlichte Tragödie Katte. Burte ist vor allem als alemannischer Mundartdichter bekannt. Burte war spätestens seit 1912 ein Verfechter der völkischen Ideologie und später ein Anhänger nationalsozialistischer Ideen." Fortan als Schriftsteller un…d Maler tätig, erschien 1912 "unter dem Eindruck der Vorkriegsstimmung der völkisch-nationalistische Heimatroman 'Wiltfeber, der ewige Deutsche', in dem durch die Verehrung eines aristokratischen Führers und das Streben nach Erneuerung des Volkstums wesentliche Elemente der nationalsozialistischen Ideologie vorweggenommen wurden. Willig übernahm er die Rolle eines Propagandadichters und rechtfertigte die Judenverfolgung. Nach dem Krieg wurde sein nationalsozialistisches Engagement weitgehend ausgeklammert, und er blieb in seiner süddeutschen Heimat geschätzt" (DBE), wurde 1957 gar mit der Jean-Paul-Medaille ausgezeichnet.
