Paperback or Softback. Condition: New. Lexicon linguae Copticae. Book.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Early reprint ("Fifteenth Thousand" as stated upon title page; first published 1851). 370 pages. Hardcover: H 19.5cm x L 13.25cm. Contemporary brown cloth; several black ink stains to boards and slightly sunned spine; bumping and slight wear at spine ends and board corners. Strong toning to pastedowns; three antiquarian ink inscriptions Port Gibson, Mississippi resident Samuel Briscoe, Esq. on front free endpaper with yet another on front flyleaf with those having some carry-through impressions onto successive title and Preface leaves; varied foxing (occasionally quite strong) throughout; several ink blots/stains obscuring some text on pages 119-120; top corners of pages 129-130 and 341-342 creased from past fold-down. Binding is firm. Preface by editor James Young who, as the title page notes, served as Grand Worthy Patriarch of the Grand Division of the Sons of Temperance in Kentucky. Features seventeen essays by various contributors including the renowned Dr. Daniel Drake of Cincinnati, and Methodist Episcopal Church theologian Reverend Thomas O. Summers. The book also has three notable Mississippi contributors: Reverend A.B. Longstreet of Oxford, twice president of University of Mississippi ("The Voice of Warning" - pages 41-60); Rev. William Winans of Woodville ("An O'er True Tale" - pages 113-118); and Rev. Philip P. Neely [Philip Phillips Neely] of Columbus ("Idella Pemberton, of the Prayer of Faith" - pages 291-298). As for the enthusiastic owner, a cemetery reference site notes a Samuel M. Briscoe (1849-1894) of Claiborne County, Mississippi and, although obviously only age 5 upon this book's publication, the penmanship and ink is certainly contemporary to 1850s-1870s.…

VOLUME I ONLY of a two volume set. Spine title "Archbold's Nisi Prius Notes by J.K. Findlay." Third American from the second London edition, with notes referring to the latest American decisions. [4], [4], ix-lxiv, 65-739 pages. Hardcover: H 23.75cm x L 15.25cm. Contemporary full brown leather; boards well rubbed with some staining; slender wear along board edges particularly at corners; some splitting at both joints causing some pliability to boards; spine leather abraded and slightly furrowed with surface chip near heel; gilt lettering to spine's muted red and black labels; owner label "Gaston Henderson" affixed near spine heel. Varied foxing/toning and some moisture staining to leaves; several leaves creased from folds; two Henderson pencil signatures on front pastedown along with ink signature "John J.V. Dennis;" pencil notes on rear free endpaper. A few stress points to binding but text block overall remains firm. Four pages of publisher advertisements at front of book. Acquired from an estate of a Columbus, Mississippi attorney who accumulated antiquarian law tomes from more senior Columbus colleagues upon their retirements; the book's original owner should be William Gaston Henderson (1828-1902) who initially served as a captain in Company B (aka "Chickasaw Rangers"), Jeff Davis Legion, Mississippi Cavalry but, at the end of the Civil War, was paroled as a lieutenant colonel in the 5th Mississippi Cavalry; cursory research does not indicate where Henderson practiced law but his enrollment in a Chickasaw County unit indicates residence in north central Mississippi but graveyard records indicate that Henderson is buried in Biloxi, Mississippi. Hardcover. Condition: very good. Histoire de Jeanne d `Arc., B.d.Charmettes, IV vols, 1817 Histoire de Jeanne d'Arc, : surnommée la Pucelle d'Orleans, by Le Brun de Charmettes, Philippe Alexandre, b. 1785 Published 1817 Topics Joan, of Arc, Saint, 1412-1431 Volume 1 Publisher Paris. : Arthus Bertrand. Pages 451 Vol.2 430 pp., vol.3 455 pp., vol. 4 468 pp. Language French 8°, clean print, scarce. HERE WITH PROMINENT PROVENANCE: HOFBIBLIOTHEK WITTELSBACH. Philippe-Alexandre Le Brun de Charmettes (17851870) was a French historian, poet, translator and official. De Charmettes was born in Bordeaux (France). He was appointed to the French Conseil d'État in 1810 and became a préfet (prefect) in the French department of Haute-Saône in 1830. A contributor to the literary magazine l'Abeille littéraire, created by Victor Hugo in 1821, he is mainly known for his successful efforts to rescue the figure of Jeanne d'Arc from partial oblivion and turn her into a national heroine. His interest for Joan came at a time when France was still struggling to define its new identity after the Revolution and the Napoleonic wars. The national ethos was in search of non controversial heroes. A staunch prop to King and country, Joan of Arc was an acceptable symbol to the monarchists. As a patriot and the daughter of commoners, she was seen as one prototype of the low-born volunteers (the soldats de l'an II) who had victoriously fought for revolutionary France in 1802 and as such could be claimed by the Republicans. As a religious martyr, she was also popular in the powerful Catholic community. De Charmette's Orleanide, today largely forgotten, was another attempt to magnify the national ethos as writers like Virgil (the Aeneid), or Camoens (the Lusiad) had done for Rome and Portugal. Significant works Histoire de Jeanne d'Arc (Histoire de Jeanne d'arc-Tome1 Tome2 Tome3 Tome4), Paris, Ed. Artus Bertrand, 1817, 4 volumes. 3pp., 12mo. 55 lines, neatly and closely written. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed to 'Mr W. Shoberl.' An excellent letter, giving an experienced and knowledgable view of the state of the mid-Victorian British booktrade. Redding begins by stating that he is 'indeed concerned to hear the statement' Shoberl has communicated to him. He wishes it was in his power to forward Shoberl's wishes. 'The Downward tendency of our present literature and its continued deterioration by the utter disregard for any thing on the part of the public but that which any body may do, with the continual competition as to price among the booksellers, have utterly destroyed authorship. The American looks to costing nothing for copyright, reprinted here as of English authorship reduce the chances of obtaining employment very low indeed. I feel the times too much myself not to sympathise with others. There is not a boarding school girl whose diatribes do not ascend in the market, better than those of an educated person who has had long experience. The prospect is gloomy enough', and Redding cannot help him. 'I have no business connections out of the old way, and so far from finding my present cause a prosperous one I look to the future with apprehension. My life with 50 years of adventures is nearly ready, but I almost despair of doing any thing with it, though I have records of so many well known characters to display.' Redding remembers Shoberl's father well, 'and when you speak of friends gone off the stage of existence I can assure you I feel the same'. In the final paragraph he again expresses a desire to assist Shoberl if he can, and he expresses a hope 'that things may soon take a turn' with him. Shoberl did gain employment in the book trade, first as assistant to the London publisher Henry Colburn, and then as a publisher in his own right.…
