There should be two issues of this pamphlet, the other is described as having a pagination error at pp. 57-64, which is corrected here, suggesting a second state, which this should be. / Chemist L.J. Thenard collaborated with Gay-Lussac in the study of metals, and together they arrived at the separation of sodium and potassium by chemistry, which had already been achieved through Volta's battery. The book was dedicated to Francesco Carelli, knight of the order of the Two Sicilies (etc.), by M. Giardini, who recalled how Davy's recent discovery on the "nature of alkalis and alkaline earths, "had attracted the attention of all European chemists, and so he published this vol. (p.5 ), which contains: Method employed by Mr. Davy [Metodo Impiegato dal Sig. Davy, p. 9] for the decomposition of soda ash and potash; Attempts [Tentativi . . . , p .11] employed by Davy to know the nature of alkaline earths; Extract of the memoirs read at the Inst. On a personal level, Berthollet was a pleasant man and a good friend; yet it was the man of science that Gay-Lussac took as his model. What mattered most was his conception of scientific activity. Even if his subject, chemistry, distanced him from the great mathematics on the one hand, and biology on the other, he remained open to a certain multidisciplinary approach. The definition of chemical mass is improved and the validity of fixed proportions in compounds is examined. "Originally suggested by Guyton de Morveau to eliminate the confused synonymy of chemistry, and prefaced by a memoir of Lavoisier, it emerged as a complete break with the past. In effect the scheme was based upon the new [anti-phlogiston] discoveries and theoriesIn a series of tables the 'Nomenclature' listed the elements (substances non décomposées), that is, those bodies that had not been, or perhaps could not be decomposed. Fifty-five in number, these simple bodies included light and Lavoisier's "matter of fire" now called "caloric"; the elementary gases: oxygen, nitrogen (azote), and "inflammable air", now called hydrogen; carbon, sulphur, and phosphorus; the sixteen known metals; a long list of organic "radicals" (i. e. accidifiable bases); and the as yet undecomposed alkaline earths and alkalis. Plate mark 27 x 22cm; sheet 33.4 x 24cm. Official portrait of the celebrated Savoyard chemist shown as an academician wearing the Grand-Cross of the Legion of Honour. Berthollet published his work on dyeing techniques in 1791 and was appointed professor of chemistry at the Ecole Polytechnique in 1794. He was also a member of the commission charged with the selection and transport of art objects looted in Italy by the French revolutionary army in 1795. The painter Julien-Léopold (Jules) Boilly is best known for his lithographic iconography of members of the Institut Royal de France.
