Edition : Printed privately, contemporary full vellume, with single straight lined blind toole boarder. Flat spine title in gilt., Sadi the prominante persian poet studied in Baghdad, where he met Suhrawardi, the founder of the Ishraqi or "Illumination" School whose original writings, attempted a synthesis of Zoroastrian, Platonic, and Islamic ideas; interpreting the Platonic Ideas in terms of Zoroastrian angelology. The "Orient" of his "Oriental Theosophy" is the symbolic Orient, the East and the dawn as the symbol of Spiritual Light and Knowledge. Sadi having to flee Baghdad because of the Mongol threat, he went on a long journey that took him to central Asia and India, then to Yemen and Ethiopia through Mecca. Sadi was captured by the Franks in Syria and worked as slave labour until he was ransomed. He proceeded to N Africa and Anatolia, before returning to his native Shiraz in 1256. His Bustan [fruit garden], an ethical-didactic text, was composed in mathnawi (rhyming couplets). Even more popular is his Gulistan [Garden of Roses], written in rhyming prose. Sadi is also the author of many qasidas (long panegyrics) in Persian and Arabic, of mystic ghazal (love poems), and of satiric poetry. His tomb in Shiraz is a shrine., Size : 8vo, P. title, blank, contents, blank, introduction V-VIII, 1-282. An uncut copy. Water damage to lower left hand portion of upper board and lower right hand portion of lower board not affecting the interior.

11.25 x 7.5 inches. [ca. 228 leaves] Written mostly in old Farsi, with some Arabic marginal notes. With one leaf [f. 66] illuminated on upper quadrant, another 2 leaves with a penciled sketch where an illumination was planned but never completed [ff. 108, 170]. There are numerous decorative motifs of flowers throughout the manuscript. Each leaf is variously partitioned, perhaps suggestive of a garden[!], in this case with flowers adorning most leaves. Binding style suggests 18-19th centuries. Bound in Islamic style, Ottoman period, full Turkey morocco, with elaborate gilt rule, corner and centre ornamental flourishes, with leather flap; some minor repairs to the sides of the binding are evident when examined closely. MANUSCRIPT OF SAADI' GOLESTAN THE GREAT PERSIAN POET: ORIGINAL COMPLETE MANUSCRIPT OF ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS OF ALL PERSIAN POETS, SA'ADI OF SHIRAZI. The calligraphic style and the binding are suggestive of the 16th or 17th century. This piece is embellished with numerous leaves, many of which are decorated by hand with small compartments of flowers, each realized from the title of Sa'adi's Gulistan [Golestan], Flower Garden of Sa'adi. Sa'adi is "probably the single most influential work of prose in the Persian tradition, completed in 1258 by Mosarref-al-Din Mole, known as Shaikh Sa'di of Shiraz." â" Encyclopaedia Iranica. / The manuscript is mixed with both poetry and stories or narratives along with a moral, as well as some commentaries. / PROVENANCE: Signed Kiffin Yates Rockwell (1892â"1916) [later label of: Kiffin Ayres Rockwell], Beloit, Wisconsin, June 28, 1942. Kiffin Yates Rockwell was a World War I fighter pilot and the first American to shoot down an enemy aircraft in WWI. He shot down a German pilot. Thus the manuscript is clearly in the United States and kept there since before 1942. "Kiffin Yates Rockwell, the youngest son of James Chester and Loula Ayres Rockwell." [see below]. What may clear up some confusion here is that there are at least two persons with this name and there may be three. Kiffin Ayres Rockwell, II or III (Oct. 8, 1917-Jan. 27, 1998), who served in the air force in Korea, is buried in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Sa'adi opens with poems of Sa'eb of Tabriz, a Safavid poet of Indian style of poetry, added to the text. "Back of the shell, kingly gems are orphans.".

Quart. Titelblatt mit Vignette, (16), 444gezählte Blätter. Späterer Halbpergamentband mit alten Material gebunden, Pergamentecken. Henry de Bracton was probably born at Bratton Fleming in Devonshire, became an ecclesiastic and probably learned law as a royal clerk, possibly to William Raleigh, later a royal judge. He is recorded as an itinerant justice in the Midlands in 1245 and in the West of England from 1248 to 1260. He was a judge of the King`s Bench from 1248 to about 1257. In 1264 he was appointed archdeacon of Barnstaple and, later that year, chancellor of Exeter cathedral. (D. Walker, The Oxford Companion to Law, Oxford 1980) This is a complete Treatise upon the law of England as it existed when Bracton wrote. It is devided into five books, and these are subdivided with method and system, affording a copious and accurate detail of legal learning. Bracton`s method of treating his subjects, resembles that of Justinian, whom he often introduces in ipsissimis verbis, as well as the canon law, wshich has led some to suppose that he was more of the civilian and canonist than the common lawyer. At the time he wrote the Pope`s supremacy in England was abolute, and it is not surprising, therefore, that in his work we find the common, the civil, and the canon law in juxtaposition. The authority of Bracton has occasionally been questioned, when it was the fashion of the times to underrate every work in any way connected with the canon or the civil law, but this author has always had warm admirers and able defenders. Fulbech, two hundred and fifty years since, says - "There be some ancient writers of the law, namely Bracton, Britton, and Glainville, whom, as it is not unprofitable to read, so to rely upon them is dangerous; for most of that which they do give forth for law is now antiquated and abolished; their books are monumenta adorandae rubignis, which be of more reverence than authority." Fitzherbert informs us that it was agreed by the whole court in 35 Hen. VI. that BRacton was never taken for an authority in our law. Upon reference to the Year Book it appears that Fitzherbert is not warranted in the assertion. Plowden, in his Commentaries, says that Bracton and Granville were not authorities in our law, but are only cited as ornaments to discourse when they agree with the law. Staunforde, however, held t.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. Octavo (ca. 23,5x16,5 cm). With two title pages (in English and Farsi). 348 pp. (numbered in Eastern Arabic system). Text in Farsi. With numerous ink and pencil written commentaries in English, Arabic, and Farsi on verso of the title page and in text. Period brown full sheep with gilt lettered title "Lees. Persian Series" on the front board and a gilt lettered title label on the spine; marbled endpapers, bookseller's paper label (Arthur Probsthain, Oriental Bookseller, London), in the left lower corner of the front pastedown endpaper. Binding slightly rubbed, paper slightly age toned, otherwise a very good copy. Very rare Indian imprint with only four paper copies found in Worldcat. Second unaltered edition was published under the same title in 1871. "The Iqd-I Gul" or "The Rose Necklace" is a collection of short stories, aphorisms and parables from the famous "Gulistan" by Sa'adi Shirazi and "Anwar-I Sohail" (or "The light of Canopus") by ?osayn W??e? K??ef? (b. 1502). "Gulistan" is Sa'adi's second major work after the "Bustan" ("Garden"). It consists of small stories of aphoristic character, with elegant intricate plots expressed in precise and exact lines. This "multi-layered" poem led to the creation of an Iranian saying: "Every line of Sa'adi has 72 meanings". Gulistan contains hidden context of Sufi character and is deeply connected with the teachings of as-Suhrawerdi. (b. 1155). "Anwar-I Sohail" is a book of fables, inspired by the classical Indian moral stories of "Kalila wa Dimna" and early Arabic works of Ibn al-Muqaffa' (724-760); it consists of fourteen chapters "commissioned by and dedicated to the Timurid amir Ne??m-al-Din Sheikh A?mad Sohayli, whose name is alluded to in the title" (Encyclopaedia Iranica online). The collection was assembled by the principal of the Calcutta Madrasa and a noted orientalist William Nassau Lees (1825-89). "He was for some years principal of the Madrásá or Mohammedan College, Calcutta (averaging four hundred students), in which institution he was also professor of law, logic, literature, and mathematics. He was likewise secretary to the college of Fort William, Persian translator to the government, and government examiner in Arabic, Persian, and Urdu for all branches of the service, besides being for some years part proprietor of the 'Times of India' newspaper, and was an incessant contributor to the daily press on all Indian topics, political, military, and economical. In 1857 the university of Dublin conferred on him the honorary degree of LL.D., and he was also a doctor in philosophy of Berlin. He became a member of the Royal Asiatic Society, London, in 1872". The "Iqd-I Gul" consists of several parts, titled "Dervish's Morals", "Padishah's Lessons" etc. Our copy is interspersed with period ink marginalia, apparently made by a student of the Calcutta Madrasa, among which are translations of specific words and expressions, remarks on the stories, dates when a particular story was read (mainly in 1875), et al.: "grazing fields of Paradise" (p. 114), "Bravo!" (p. 118), "Story of the Raven & the Serpent" (p. 205), "Story of the Hare and the Wolf" (p. 210), et al.
