As an intro to a recent lecture to UEA students I said this: ‘other than Mr. I have no prefix; I’m not a prof or a doc, and the letters I have after my name have absolutely nothing to do with geology, hydrology, or geomorphology; should I need a suitable prefix it would have to be ‘old’. I have lived here on the north coast of Norfolk for a long time, I have observed and recorded the changes; the storms, the broken banks, the retreating shoreline, a growing marsh, and the silting creeks, and remain insatiably curious as to how this fluid and often tempestuous world I live in functions’. My life and the histories of the communities along this coast have all been shaped but this geophysical change. Much of what I understand I have later seen confirmed in geophysical papers, some of what I understand is known only to me, but of course if you read this book you will know it too.
