Hacia 1999, el filólogo y poeta Luis Alberto de Cuenca encontró en una librería de viejo una edición de Les contes des fées, de Charles Perrault, ilustrados por Lucien Lafo…rge en blanco y negro y color y publicados por Jean Cocteau y Blaise Cendrars en sus Éditions de La Sirène en 1920. El libro, una auténtica joya bibliográfica, incluía los ocho cuentos en prosa del gran narrador francés: La bella durmiente del bosque, Capertucita Roja, Barba Azul, El gato con botas, Las hadas, Cenicienta, Riquete el del Copete y Pulgarcito. Más allá de la innegable magia de los textos, la labor del ilustrador Laforge resulta tan delicada y tan radicalmente moderna para su tiempo que invitaba a asumir el reto de su reedición. Para ello, se ha respetado el formato y, con ligeras variantes, la maquetación originales. El propio Luis Alberto de Cuenca, Profesor de Investigación del CSIC y Premio Nacional de Traducción, ha cuidado de la edición y ha trasladado al castellano los cuentos de Perrault, siguiendo fielmente la edición ilustrada por Laforge, que excluye las moralejas en verso que figuran en la editio princeps de 1697. El estilo de Perrault es de una claridad y una frescura enormemente gratificantes y los dibujos de Laforge se adelantan a su época, e incluso a la actual, en sus planteamientos estéticos, de una originalidad apabullante. Un volume in-4°, broché, couverture souple couleur crème, titre en lettres rouges et noires, avec une illustration de L. LAFORGE sur le 1er plat ( trois rats en train de jouer avec la chaussure d'un cadavre), 32 pages, une illustration (saisissante) in-texte sur chaque page, en noir et blanc.Ces illustrations sont de Lucien LAFO…RGE (1889-18562), artiste génial, pacifiste et libertaire, qui a laissé une oeuvre extrêmement recherchée des collectionneurs. L'auteur du texte, Lucien DESCAVE, fut également connu pour ses idées pacifistes, imprégnées d'anarchisme. Son roman LA COLONNE (1901) est ainsi dédié: "A la descendance des héros de la Commune dont la gloire est d'avoir jeté à bas le mat de cocagne impérial (.) je dédie cet encouragement à recommencer".Notre exemplaire, sur papier vergé, porte le N° 635 (sur un total de 1000). Le texte commence ainsi : "Ah! que ce La Fontaine nous connaissait mal!"Amère et virulent pamphlet contre les profiteurs de gu…erre nourri par la terrible histoire des tranchées que ce texte écrit du point de vue des rats. Il devait paraître en 1917 mais la publication en fut interdite par la censure. Préface en fac-similé de Lucien Descaves. «Les deux Lucien ont en commun une forme d'ironie cinglante, impitoyable, à laquelle peu d'adversaires peuvent opposer résistance.» YvesFrémion, Lespetits miquets.Ce livre fut réédité en 2014, aux Éditions Prairial. Légères piqures aux couvertures, présentes également dans l'ouvrage.

The spine and edges of the folder are worn, with small pieces missing at the spine ends, and several small water stains on both covers. Name (R M Packard), date (11-1-24), and number (1.75) on inside front cover of the folder. The folder's original fore-edge ribbon is missing. Valuable for its Lucien Laforge illustrations. Book is Near Fine and quite uncommon given the limited nature of the production of this copy - 50… copies on Whatman paper. Plates in full color in a round format are quite striking in an art deco style. An additional 60 black and white drawings throughout. First edition, first printing, one of one of 50 deluxe copies on Whatman; square 4to (25.5 x 25.5 cm); 8 circular pochoir plates 'colorià au patron' and 60 black and white illustrations in the text after Laforge; modern black morocco, flat spine, title in silver to spine, original pink wrappers bound in, a fine copy. misc23 Char…les Perrault's classic fairy tales are here illustrated with striking art deco pochoir plates by Lucien Laforge. This copy is from the first printing of 50 examples on thick paper and is not only much rarer than the general trade edition but is far superior in terms of quality. Lucien Laforge was born in Paris in 1889 and was a staunch pacifist, feigning lunacy twice to be discharged during WWI. He published a work in 1922 titled 'le film 1914' which satirised the conflict with grotesque cartoons, blaming the horrors on the greed and stupidity of the wealthy elite. His simple and sometimes haunting style is also evident in his illustrations for fairy tales and was not considered fashionable at the time but displays the chilling legacy of the war. The bold black lines of his characters were incredibly progressive and appear almost cartoon-like.
