First Edition
First Edition. Fine paperback copy; slightly dust-dulled. Remains well-preserved overall. Summary; The Courtauld Collection: A Vision for Impressionism' accompanies a landmark exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris exploring Samuel Courtauld's role as one of the great collectors of the twentieth century. The catalogue and exhibition showcase Courtauld's extraordinary collection, which will be on display in Paris for the first time in over sixty years. One of the finest collections of Impressionism anywhere in the world was assembled by the English industrialist and philanthropist Samuel Courtauld (1876-1947). During the 1920s, Courtauld acquired seminal works by all of the major Impressionists, from Renoir's early masterpiece La Loge to Manet's last great work, A Bar at the Folies-Bergere. His collection grew to include such iconic works as Gauguin's great Tahitian nude Nevermore and one of Van Gogh's most famous paintings, Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear. Courtauld was particularly devoted to Cezanne and put together the largest collection of his work in the United Kingdom, including the epic Montagne Sainte-Victoire with Large Pine and one of the celebrated Card Players. After a decade of collecting, Courtauld gave the majority of these remarkable works to establish The Courtauld Institute of Art and Gallery in London. [From Chile, behind the scenes by Herve Mikaeloff, page 8] The Espace culturel Louis Vuitton pursues its artistic explorations with a subjective radiography of contemporary Chilean art. Chile is the world's longest and narrowest country, extending for nearly 2,700 miles down the coast of South America with an average width of just 110 miles. It is bordered on one side by the Pacific Ocean and on the other by the Andes Cordillera, a natural, and at times psychological, frontier which gives Chile a unique place among the countries of Latin America. For much of the 20th century, Chile's history was one of political instability and coups d'Etat - a period that came to an end with the arrival of Salvador Allende as the country's first democratic elected President, advocating a program of socialist reform. The hope he held out for national identity was brutally extinguish on September 11,1973, when power was seized by General Augusto Pinochet. Torture, kidnappings of political opponents, and numerous disappearances - many of which remain a mystery - became the everyday experience of the Chilean people. Democracy was reestablished in 1990, and modern Chile is regarded today as a model of political and economic stability. The country's unique geographical and political situation has clearly and deeply influenced its people, and notably its artists, who are the living expression of the Chilean soul. These artists enjoy public support in their own country, but their work is still rarely seen or collected beyond its borders. With this exhibition and the many artworks specially produced for the Espace culturel Louis Vuitton, our aim is to testify to the creativity in motion on the other side of the Andes.
