The Works of John Locke, Esq; In Three Volumes. The Fifth Edition. To Which is now first added, The Life of the Author; and A Collection of several of his Pieces published by Mr. Desmaizeaux, Complete in Three Volumes, Printed for S. Birt, D. Browne, T. Longman, J. Shuckburgh, C. Hitch and L. Hawes, J. Hodges, J. Oswald, A. Millar, J. Beecroft, J. & J. Rivington, J. Ward, and M. Cooper, London, 1751, frontis of Locke by George Virtue, full original leather, 14 x 9.5 , folios. In as-is condition. Front and rear boards detached from Vol I, Vol III. Front board detached from Vol II, rear board repaired poorly, but attached. Heavy wear to extremities with scuffing along edges and corners. Corners rounded with board exposed. Numerous flaws to surface of leather. Evidence of ret rot alogn edges and joints. Prone to flaking and chipping. Spines perished and split on each volume. Spine labels mostly missing and or severely chipped. Ex-library of the Rochester Theological Seminary number 4257. The Rev. John Watson s bookplate on pastedowns. His manuscript notations are found on the fly on Volume I stating: In the picture Gallery at Oxford is an original painting of Mr. Locke he has also written notations on the pagination of the Epistles in Volume III. Internally good with light toning at edges with foxing throughout. All edges red but faded. Free of known marginalia. Bindings split. An excellent candidate for professional restoration. Copper-engraved frontispiece portrait by George Vertue to volume one. "John Locke is regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers and the Father of Classical Liberalism. "Locke was the first to take up the challenge of Bacon and to attempt to estimate critically the certainty and the adequacy of human knowledge when confronted with God and the universe" (PMM 164). This is the first edition of the first collected edition of his work and the earliest to put his name to "Two Treatises on Government" as well as the letters on "Toleration"and "The Reasonableness of Christianity". Contents include: Volume 1: An Essay concerning Human Understanding. In Four Books; A Letter to the Right Reverend Edward Lord Bishop of Worcester, concerning some Passages relating to Mr. Locke's Essay of Human Understanding, in a late Discourse of his Lordship's in Vindication of the Trinity; Mr. Locke's Reply to the Right Reverend the Bishop of Worcester's Answer to the Letter; Mr. Locke's Reply to the Bishop of Worcester's Answer to his Second Letter. Volume 2: Some Considerations of the Consequences of the lowering of Interest, and raising the Value of Money. In a Letter send to a Member of Parliament. 1691; Short Observations on a printed Paper, entitled, For encouraging the coining SilverMoney in England, and after for keeping it here; Further Observations concerning raising the Value of Money.
