Synopsis

Op de laatste avond van oktober 1984 ziet een jongen hoe zijn beste vriend verongelukt. Het is zijn laatste avond als kind, voortaan moet hij flink zijn en vooruitkijken. Maar wel met een verdriet dat aan niemand uit te leggen is, en met schuldgevoel, met rouw, met gemis en met de dood die er niet genoeg van krijgt. Want in de zomer van 1998 verliest een broer zijn broer en jaren later, op dezelfde dag, een zoon zijn moeder.

De jongen is inmiddels geliefde geworden, man en vader, ook door die doden. De dagen worden mede door hen bepaald. Ze zitten in zijn schrijven, in het zijn en in het liefhebben, ze zitten in alle twijfels, struikelingen en worstelingen. Ze reizen mee naar verre landen. Ze zijn thuis waar hij woont.

Dan wordt het 2022 en hij plant een boom.

In Treurwil zoekt Rik Van Puymbroeck naar verdriet van vroeger en hoe je dat niet kan loslaten, maar juist wilt vasthouden en vorm wilt geven. Hoe de rouw minder rauw wordt, al verwoordt de tweeklank treffend de toch onmiskenbaar blijvende pijn.
