About this Item

Description:

Very Good First Edition in original red cloth boards. Binding is sound and square with pages clean and unmarked aside from a small pencil notation on the front free endpaper. An engaging history of timekeeping by astronomer and educator Paul M. Chamberlain. Written for the general reader, the work traces humanity's efforts to measure time, from ancient sundials and water clocks through the development of mechanical clocks, escapements, chronometers, and modern precision timekeeping. Numerous illustrations and technical diagrams help explain the evolution of horological science and engineering.

Published during the early twentieth century, this volume occupies an interesting place between popular science and horological scholarship. It remains attractive to collectors of clocks and watches, historians of science and technology, and readers interested in the cultural and scientific development of time measurement. The clear explanations and period illustrations make it both a useful reference and an enjoyable historical survey.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. First Edition. Paul M. Chamberlain (1865 - 1940) was an engineer and a renowned horologist whose depth of knowledge was well-known in the community dedicated to time pieces. This fascinating book was compiled from articles he had written over the preceeding twenty-five years on the history and development of the lever escarpment--not only detailing the technology but celebrating the watchmakers who advanced the designs. His goal was to produce a book devoted to this topic, and it was accomplished posthumously. Each chapter is illustrated with diagrams and photos. Contains an index and a biographical sources in the rear. Original publisher's red cloth covers with gilt spine lettering and a small gilt illustration on the front cover. There is a tiny snag to the top edge of the rear cover, a bit of sunning to the top edge of the front cover and a little fading to the spine (the spine lettering is dull, but quite legible), else this is a clean, unmarked copy with no previous owner names or bookplates. Please inquire if you would like more information.; B&W Photos & Drawings; 4to 11" - 13" tall. Seller Inventory # 21786

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Illustrated (illustrator). First Edition. First edition. Introduction by Dr. W. Barclay Stephens and "An Appreciation" by Jean Louis Roehrich. Original cloth, slight fading to spine, very good plus to fine minus. In original red and yellow dust jacket with the original price intact on the front flap, closed tear at bottom of front fold, wear to bottom of spine. no chips or other tears. great eye appeal. This jacket is recently out of storage after 50 years!!! This heaviness of the book and fragility of the dust jacket made for major problems for the jacket. Because this jacket was stored separately from the book, it has kept most of its original beauty. It is now housed in a archival jacket protector. The book itself is one of the most important books for watch collectors, and we can't imagine a better copy every coming on the market. Seller Inventory # 004243
