He wrote some of his best work while working as a porter in the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford during the 2nd World War - a job he was assigned as a conscientious objector. He was born in Carshalton, Surrey (a leafy suburb of London). His last decades were spent in Leigh on Sea, a small town on the Thames estuary in Essex.
