Minor spotting, and ink stain on the back of the frontespiece in part one. Rebacked contemporary full calf, the original gilt spines with green labels are mounted on the new, original boards. Two volumes. With ink on front paste down: ?The Gift of the Rev. Dr. Hunt to William Gould 1821? First published in 1764 these imitations of the Arabian Nights (published by Galland the same year) was a great success. New editions were published up to the middle of the 19th-century and it was a favorite book of Charles Dickens.The author James Kenneth Ridley (1736-65), in the disguise of Charles Morell ?formerly ambassador in India to the Great Mogul?, was in fact a British clergyman and chaplain to the British Army who probably never traveled abroad. The tales are in a fictional manner composed by an imam named Horam and translated from a Persian manuscript. The 14 engraved plates are both drawn and engraved by alternatively A.
