Add to basketFolio (280 x 375 mm). Unpaginated, issues numbered 201-400 printed on coloured paper in pink and pale yellow. Contemporary three quarter leather and textured cloth, with title and issue numbers in gilt on spine. The first official Ottoman state newspaper and the first Turkish paper printed in Istanbul. Published under Mahmud II (1785-1839) in 1831 as part of the Sultan's campaign to promote cohesion in the Empire, the newspaper was popular among the elite and well-educated classes of Istanbul. Here in two hundred issues, it discusses state and military news as well as decisions made by the Sultan, financial and regulatory updates, foreign events, and items of general interest, from scientific discoveries to commercial events and public notices. - Appearing here in Turkish, the newspaper was also occasionally published, for portions of its run, in a selection of the other languages of the Empire, including Arabic, Persian, Greek, Armenian and French. It remains a valuable resource for historians interested in the intimate details of the Ottoman state in the middle and late 19th century. - Light wear, spine professionally restored, altogether in good condition. Provenance: 20th century Parisian private collection, kept in the family for several generations and dispersed in 2022.
