Mischief, mistaken identity, and social satire collide in this timeless comedy of manners.
Oliver Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer is a witty and fast-paced play that skewers class pretensions, courtship customs, and the absurdities of 18th-century British society. When a wealthy country gentleman arranges a match between his daughter Kate and the shy aristocrat Charles Marlow, plans go hilariously awry thanks to a prank by the roguish Tony Lumpkin. Mistaking Kate's home for an inn, Marlow behaves outrageously—especially to the man he doesn't realize is his future father-in-law.
As Kate "stoops" to disguise herself as a barmaid to win Marlow's affections, layers of deception pile up, exposing the vanity and vulnerability of every class. Brimming with humor, charm, and biting social commentary, this enduring classic celebrates love, laughter, and the chaos of being human.
Perfect for fans of Jane Austen, Restoration comedy, and satirical plays that challenge the rules of polite society.
Rediscover why this 18th-century gem remains one of the most performed English comedies of all time.
