The feeling arrived sometime in my late twenties, after what most people would call a successful decade. I had the title, the salary band, the apartment with the view, the conference invitations, the social media following large enough to be flattering and small enough to be manageable. By every external measure available to me — and to my parents, my high school classmates, the algorithm that decides what shows up in my LinkedIn feed — I was winning.
And yet, almost every Sunday evening, I felt a peculiar emptiness. Not depression. Not even unhappiness, exactly. Something more like the sensation you get when you finish a long meal and realize you cannot remember a single bite. I had been consuming something for years, but I could not say what it had nourished.
The feeling sent me first to the usual places: meditation apps, productivity podcasts, expensive therapy. None of it quite fit. The vocabulary I needed did not exist in self-help. It existed, scattered and untranslated, in evolutionary biology, behavioral economics, organizational psychology, animal communication theory, and a single brilliant 2019 essay by a former Amazon and Hulu executive named Eugene Wei.
Wei's essay, titled "Status as a Service (StaaS)," argued that the dominant social platforms of our era — Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn — succeed not because they connect us, entertain us, or inform us, but because they offer us something far more primal: an efficient marketplace in which to earn and trade social status. Every like, every follower, every blue checkmark is a token in a game we are playing whether we know it or not. The platforms, Wei suggested, are not the disease. They are the most honest mirror humanity has ever held up to itself.
Reading Wei's essay was the first time the Sunday-night feeling had a name. But naming it raised a much larger question. If status really is the engine, surely it does not stop at the edges of our phones. Surely it explains the choice of major, the choice of partner, the choice of car, the choice of vacation, the choice of cause, the choice of friends, the choice of words at a dinner party. Surely it explains why a Whitehall civil servant in 1980 with a slightly lower job grade than the colleague at the next desk had a measurably higher risk of dying of a heart attack — even after controlling for income, smoking, and diet. Surely it explains why a peacock drags an absurd, predator-attracting tail through the underbrush, and why a thirty-eight-year-old account executive drags an absurd, debt-attracting Range Rover through suburban traffic.
It does. That is the argument of this book.
I owe an enormous intellectual debt to Wei, whose framework I have extended (with permission, where required, and with attribution throughout) from the narrow domain of social platforms to the entire architecture of modern life. I owe debts also to Thorstein Veblen, who saw most of this in 1899; to Pierre Bourdieu, who mapped the cultural-capital terrain in the 1970s; to Robert Frank, who measured the positional treadmill in the 1980s; to Edward Deci and Richard Ryan, whose Self-Determination Theory provides the most rigorous available exit ramp; to Sir Michael Marmot, whose Whitehall studies turned status into an epidemiological variable; and to Tim Kasser, whose decades of research on materialism showed me that this is not a metaphor — that the costs of the status game are paid in the currency of the human nervous system.
A note on what this book is not. It is not a polemic against ambition. It is not a sermon against social media, a romanticization of poverty, or a brief for dropping out. Status itself is not the enemy; status is a feature of every social mammal on the planet, and we cannot wish it away any more than we can wish away gravity.
Welcome to the game. Let's begin by learning its name.

Store description
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free.
