Print on Demand. This book is a collection of thousands of common proverbs and expressions used by Arabic speakers in everyday life. Though a wealth of such expressions exists in Arabic culture, most are not contained in the classical Arabic dictionaries typically used by scholars. The author, who lived and worked in the Middle East, meticulously collected these proverbs directly from native Arabic speakers, noting not only the literal translation but the actual, often surprising ways the expressions are used in everyday speech. Many of the proverbs are quite vulgar and reflect the earthy realities of life in the region. Others show a surprising tenderness and wit. The proverbs included in this book come from many different locations, with the author noting regional variations and pointing out the differences in pronunciation and usage. This book is a fascinating resource for students of the Arabic language, and provides a rare glimpse into the rich tapestry of Arabic culture. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
