Franz Kafka est un �crivain pragois de langue allemande et de religion juive, n� le 3 juillet 1883 � Prague et mort le 3 juin 1924 � Kierling. Il est consid�r� comme l'un des �crivains majeurs du 20 eme si�cle. Surtout connu pour ses romans Le Proc�s et Le Ch�teau ainsi que pour la nouvelle La M�tamorphose , Franz Kafka laisse cependant une œuvre plus vaste, caract�ris�e par une atmosph�re cauchemardesque, sinistre, o� la bureaucratie et la soci�t� impersonnelle ont de plus en plus de prise sur l'individu. Hendrik Marsman d�crit cette atmosph�re comme une � objectivit� extr�mement �trange... � L'œuvre de Kafka est vue comme symbole de l'homme d�racin� des temps modernes. D'aucuns pensent cependant que l'œuvre de Kafka est uniquement une tentative, dans un combat apparent avec les � forces sup�rieures �, de rendre l'initiative � l'individu, qui fait ses choix lui-m�me et en est responsable. Franz Kafka est n� � Prague, alors capitale de la Boheme, qui faisait partie de l'empire austro-hongrois. Son grand-p�re, Jacob Kafka, venait d'une ville de province tch�que, Osek, et installa � Prague un petit commerce. Il est le fils de Hermann Kafka (1852-1931) et de Julie Kafka, n�e L�wy (1856-1934), issue d'une riche famille de Podebrady. Il avait deux fr�res, Georg et Heinrich, morts en bas �ge, en 1885 et 1887, et trois sœurs plus jeunes : Gabrielle (Elli) (1889-1941), Valerie (Valli) (1890-1942) et Ottilie (Ottla) (1892-1943), qui, lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, furent d�port�es au ghetto de Lodz et y moururent. Kafka a eu une enfance solitaire. Sa langue maternelle �tait l'allemand comme pour pr�s de 10 % de la population de Prague � l'�poque.
