[Paris: Chez Jean de Bonnot, 1994]. 71, [13] pp. Two full-page illustrations (depicting chastity belts). Patterned boards. Light soiling, somewhat heavier along spine, internally fresh. A handsome book. $95. * From an edition of 3000 numbered copies, this number 2947. After seducing Marie Lajon, Pierre Barthe refused to marry her and forced her to wear a chastity belt. She brought suit for breach of promise and hired the counselor Freydier, whose first name is not recorded. In great detail, the lawyer describes the chastity belt in question, embellishing his argument with reference to Plato, the Book of Genesis and St. Jerome and other Church Fathers. As the original publication and its various reprints seem to be the only record, this case may be fictional. The section by Philomneste, Junior, a pseudonym of Gustave Brunet, is a historical and literary discussion of chastity belts. Seller Inventory # 74752
