FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION. 4to. (12.6 X 8.9 Inches). Each of the 20 leaves is printed in full colour chromolithography, on the rectos only, including the beautiful decorative title page and 17 leaves of illuminated text within highly decorative borders, printed in full colour and heightened in gold and silver. The whole book was Chromolithographed by W. R. Tymms after designs by W. & G. Audsley. Two neat inscriptions on the front blank endpaper, dated 1881 and 1906. Some neat professional repairs to page edges but overall the pages are clean and bright and each page mounted onto tabs so that it opens fully without risking the spine cracking, a fault common with these gutter percha bindings of the mid Victorian period. The book has been expertly rebound in burgundy cloth, with bevelled edges, to match the original, with new endpapers and the original original decorative cloth boards and spine mounted onto the new boards. In the publishers highly decorative boards with lettering and elaborate design to both boards, the rear in blind, the front using gilt, green and white. The spine lettered and decorated in gilt. Some rubbing to the edges of the binding and wear to the top and bottom of spine but overall an attractive copy of this beautiful edition. Housed in a twentieth century quarter morocco clam shell box with velvet lining. The spine lettered in gilt.…
