12mo. 19cm x 12cm. Bound in publisher's beautiful gold-stamped pictorial full brown leather binding. AEG. With 9 illustrations by J.G.Chapman. Includes the first appearance of the Poe short story Morning on the Wissahiccon (p249-59), later called The Elk. This is plate story written to accompany the illustration Morning, a travel/nature story. The Opal was an anthology publication with a religius and moral focus, this being the first volume. With the bookplate of Joseph Benjamin Oakleaf (1858-1930) on the front fixed endpaper. Oakleaf was a book and autograph collector.
