Synopsis:

At the top, on the mast tip, in the lookout sit the column pens. Maps on the knees they study shallows, coastlines and driving gutters. Sometimes, when they get embarrassed, they use the help of social-science-savvy geographers who call out the missing keywords to them. The "formed society" was such a stick word in the sixties, "ungovernability" and "change of values" determined the seventies. There are signs that this decade is that of "neoconservatism".

The present essay assumes that not the word »neoconservatism«, but what it objectively designates will still determine the political-intellectual scene of Western societies when the day-political circumstances under which it started its present career have long since disappeared in the archives of contemporary history. Therefore, he first traces how the neoconservative social science intelligence in the USA and the Federal Republic has "occupied" the central political discourses. The practical-political success of her semantic campaign in the seventies reads like an affirmation of Gramsci's assertion that political power follows "cultural hegemony" at its feet. Ideology-political topography is criticized in the light of the critical theory of late capitalism. Based on a reinterpretation of the terms "culture", "democracy", "equality", "welfare" and "intelligence", the thesis is unfolded that the conservative spell over current politics can only be broken by a new spelling of progress.
