Item description from seller

Unmounted photographs measuring 6 5/8 x 4 6/8" 28 photographs depicting Navajo life in the early 1950s. The photographs feature men in hats, women in flowing skirts, children, and babies. The images show Navajos tending to goats and sheep, riding on horses and in wagons (the most common means of transportation in Navajo country), and dancing in couples. In these photographs one also sees housing, a hogan, the traditional hairstyle of Navajo women, and two women with blankets around their shoulders. With the photographs is a sheet of paper claiming that the photographs are attributed to Allen C. Reed. Reed wrote and produced photographs for "Arizona Highways" in the 1950s. Apparently, these photographs were not published. "Arizona Highways" catered specifically to tourists, therefore the photography was picturesque, commercial, and promotional. Reed is listed in the Appendix of James C. Faris's book "Navajo and Photography: A Critical History of the Representation of an American People." A vivid portrayal of Navajo life at that time.
