"Motor Racing" was the 33rd volume in the notable and prolific Lonsdale Library series covering sports and games. This history of motor racing covers the origins and development of the sport up to the late 1950s. The complete orbit of the sport from the design, construction, testing and competition is covered. Text is provided by a large group of expert writers, each one examining the topic in their sphere of expertise. Apart from the expected content these include contributions on racing dress evolution and events promotion. A random selection from the 28 chapter heads shows the wide extent of the coverage and include design and develoment of engines and cars, suspension, tyres and fuels for racing, pit management and car control, racing in the rain to selection and care of sparking plugs. Notable names among the contributors include John Cooper, who with his father Charles produced the famous Cooper cars, John Wyer, manager of the Ashton Martin Team, WH Heynes, Jaguar chief engineer, H Mundy, BRM designer, and drivers Ken Wharton on hill climbing and Stirling Moss, who provided coverage, from experience, of Continental and British racing circuits, complete with track layout plans. The views, experiences, aspirations and dedication to the sport of all the contributors is evident in this important and nostalgic study of a bygone, but critical, time for motor racing. Illustrated throughout with 81b/w photo plates, many full page, the 58 intext images include cutaway views of complete cars, details of parts, technical line drawing, graphs, charta and diagrams. First published in 1957 by Seeley Service, with this third new and revised edition in 1959, 316 pages including index. Light brown hard covers with gilt decoration centre front are VG with some handing marks to both boards, externded fabric spine strip has gilt titles and decoration, light foxing to both pastedowns and FEPs, text block otherwise VG++, no inscriptions.
