Georges Simenon, �crivain belge de langue fran�aise, est n� � Li�ge en 1903. Il est l'un des auteurs les plus traduits au monde. � seize ans, il devient journaliste � La Gazette de Li�ge. Son premier roman, publi� sous le pseudonyme de Georges Sim, para�t en 1921 : Au pont des Arches, petite histoire li�geoise. En 1922, il s'installe � Paris et �crit des contes et des romans populaires. Pr�s de deux cents romans, un bon millier de contes et de tr�s nombreux articles sont parus entre 1923 et 1933... En 1929, Simenon r�dige son premier Maigret : Pietr le Letton. Lanc� par les �ditions Fayard en 1931, le personnage du commissaire Maigret rencontre un immense succ�s. Simenon �crira en tout soixante-quinze romans mettant en sc�ne les aventures de Maigret (ainsi que vingt-huit nouvelles). D�s 1931, Simenon commence � �crire ce qu'il appellera ses "romans durs" : plus de cent dix titres, du Relais d'Alsace (1931) aux Innocents (1972). Parall�lement � cette activit� litt�raire foisonnante, il voyage beaucoup. � partir de 1972, il cesse d'�crire des romans. Il se consacre alors � ses vingt-deux Dict�es, puis r�dige ses M�moires intimes (1981). Simenon s'est �teint � Lausanne en 1989. Il fut le premier romancier contemporain dont l'oeuvre fut port�e au cin�ma d�s le d�but du parlant avec La Nuit du carrefour et Le Chien jaune, parus en 1931 et adapt�s l'ann�e suivante. Beaucoup de ses romans ont �t� port�s au grand �cran et � la t�l�vision. Les diff�rentes adaptations de Maigret ou, plus r�cemment, celles de romans durs (La Mort de Belle, avec Bruno Solo) ont conquis des millions de t�l�spectateurs.
