Item description from seller

An illustrated narrative biography of the rags to riches American president, a charming edition within Thayer's educative series. From Log-Bain to White House: Life of James A. Garfield, Boyhood, Youth, Manhoos and Assassination, a biography of the American president written in narrative form by author and historian William Makepeace Thayer. Dated 1904 by previous owner's inscription, first published in 1882, a year after Garfield's assassination. In the publisher's original green pictorial cloth, with a steel frontispiece, and three other illustrated plates. Collated complete. Seen as a bright hopeful whose presidency was cut short by his assassination, Garfield was best known for his oratory skills and his rise from poverty to the White House. Thayer wrote a number of educative narrative biogaphies in his White House series, including of Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses Grant. In the publisher's original green pictorial cloth. Externally, mostly smart, with the odd faint mark to boards. Minor fading and bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Dark blue end papers are clean with a couple of minor grazing marks to rear. Internally, generally firmly bound, with plate adjoining p.95 and half-title loosening, and slight wear to hinges between pp.177-178, 206-207, 366-367. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the odd spot to extremities of first and final leaves. Good. …
