By Sir Richard Westmacott, R. A. With Fifty-Three Plates. London & New York: George Bell & Sons 1892. New Edition [No Specific Edition Statement] [Reprinted From The Stereotype Plates By WM. Original brown polished calf binding with extensive gold gilt decoration on the boards and spine. Gold gilt page edges and beautiful marbles endpages. Many illustrations, portrait of the author opposite the title page and 52 illustrated plates bound at the rear of the text. This book is a prize binding, awarded to Scottish sculptor David McGill for ‘best composition in sculpture’ in 1893. Born in Ayrshire, McGill moved to London to study at the National Art Training School. He exhibited his work extensively at the Royal Academy and received a gold medal for his sculpture in plaster lone Removing the Body of St Sebastian after the Martyrdom which he won in 1894, a year after this book was awarded to him. His most famous work is a statue of Sir Wilfrid Lawson - the anti-imperialism politician - which stands in Victoria Embankment Gardens. The book itself is a series of Lectures on Sculpture given to the Royal Academy by John Flaxman, one of Britain's greatest neoclassical sculptors. The book is stunning and a complete one of one both in binding and this edition, published in 1892, is relatively scarce.
