Robert Neumann has set a shattering monument to his homeland, from which he had fled to England more than a decade before, in Children of Vienna (1946). When the novel first appeared in German in 1948, criticism reacted with perplexity. Some Neumann was considered a "nest stainer", a reproach that should later meet other authors of rank. A year before his suicide in 1975, Neumann transferred the children of Vienna into German in a fascinating art language. With this novel, a wayward, rebellious, an important voice of Austrian literature after 1945 is to be rediscovered!
