Aided by his talented orthopteran family, the learned bookseller Ian Jackson undertakes a subversive analysis of trading practice at Serendipity Books of Berkeley, California, the huge and individual book business founded and run until his death by Peter Brigham Howard (1938-2011). ("Is there any rhyme and reason to this place?" asked a bemused customer. "Yes!" Howard replied. "My rhyme and my reason.") Jackson's first volume was first published in February 1999. "A four-page leaflet of Addenda and Corrigenda was distributed a couple of months later. The second edition incorporates the contents of that leaflet and much additional material."
