"Third edition" (first edition published by Smith Elder, 1858), the first to be published under the author's name, and with an appendix of additional poems; this copy in a variant binding, the spine lettered at foot not "George Allen / 1905" but "GEORGE / ALLEN". With the ownership inscription of W.H. Bowen, 1913, and ticket of Harry Johnson & Nephew, Cambridge; loosely inserted David J. Hall's manuscript note on this variant, unnoticed by John Carter. "It was Arthur Christopher Benson's reprint of Cory's poems in 1905 which did much to popularize them with the Uranians" (Timothy d'Arch Smith). W.H. Bowen is perhaps the surgeon and Dickensian William Henry Bowen (1879-1963) who moved to Addenbrooke's in 1910.
