I used to have a fridge with a large dent in the door. My boot put the dent there one night when I again vented my anger outward. Turning anger inward is a killer I know, but venting emotion in this way, gets expensive, and very embarrassingyour Honour!
It was again anger, mixed with a little sense this time, that drove me to poetry; and so here I am today. Still angry, but with lots of paper!
I am fortunate, so I keep reminding myself, to be doing now what I love. Preaching. I am not embarrassed as a man to say that I love Jesus and His word, the Bible. Beyond reasonable doubt I have found it to be a true fire, sword, hammer, and sweet oil, all in one. I love it! At the end of each poem I have placed an echo. Something from the Bible, which resonates with my own thoughts, or maybe it's the other way round? Judge for yourself, by having a look at the verse and the context you find them in; you won't be disappointed. I preach from this book every week, and every week I am challenged and changed a little more. It is without doubt the most exciting and dangerous book in history. God help those preachers who make a sharp sword dull, and beat their hearers into the land of boredom.
I've been many things in life, from working in a chip shop, to a nuclear submariner, to a stock control clerk, to an Information Technology Consultant, to being an ordained minister. In that order as well; but with a few steps in between of course. I became a Christian whilst serving on a Polaris boat, and so God has had to be both true and real to me. My 'oppos' always told me the truth, especially when I didn't like it! I've appreciated that. Unfortunately as Christians we have been guilty of not calling a spade a spade, and coating truth in acceptable niceness, which helps no one.
Ever and always, my abiding love has been reality, and my all-consuming hate has been religion. In the end it's truth I love, and falsehood that I hate. I hope you find that the tenor of these poems sing these things to you.
