Paris, chez Persan, imprimerie de Nicolas-Vaucluse, 1823. 12:o. VIII,316 + (4),237 + (4),237 + (4),347 pp. Four volumes in nice contemporary light brown half calf with gilt spines and green labels. Blue sprinkled edges. Spines with a few minor spots, fourth label with an insignificant scratch. Slightly worn but beautifully marbled paper on boards. Foxing in parts, some dampstaining in upper margin. First volume with some unpleasant soil stains and a small hole in pp. 127-29. Long tear at bottom of pp. 81-82 in the third volume. Engraved bookplate of Axel Gabriel Oxenstierna, printed in brown with his monogram "AGO". From Eka and Säbylund manors. Fiske Icelandic collection pp. 261-62 for other editions and translations. One of Victor Hugo's first novels. A second edition printed by Lecointe et Durey was published the same year and a revised edition in 1833. Axel Gabriel Oxenstierna af Eka och Lindö (1799-1839) was cabinet chamberlain and eventually a lieutenant colonel in the Swedish army. His widow brought parts of the library at Eka to Säbylund.
