When Parks arrived in 1950, only one member of the class remained in Fort Scott, while the rest had followed the well-worn paths of the Great Migration in search of better lives in urban centers such as St. Louis, Kansas City, Columbus and Chicago. Traveling to these cities, Parks found his friends and their families and photographed them on their porches, in their parlors and dining rooms, on their way to church or at work, sitting down to interview them about their decision to leave the segregated system of their youth and head north. His resulting photo-essay and planned cover were finally slated to appear in Life in the spring of 1951, but were replaced by Truman’s firing of General MacArthur and were never published.

Review
But as a new exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston reveals, that same year, photojournalist Gordon Parks -- then the only black staff photographer at Life -- proposed a story to his editors that might have actually done so had it ever been published. Parks wanted to represent ordinary African Americans within the magazine's pages through a cover story about school segregation. The 38-year-old journalist would travel to his hometown of Fort Scott, Kansas, to find and photograph his 11 former classmates from the all-black school he once attended.--Laura C Mallonee "Hyperallergic "
In 1950, Gordon Parks traveled to his hometown in Kansas to capture the impact of school segregation in America. The photo essay never ran, but his images and the story behind them have resurfaced after 65 years in obscurity.--Eliza Berman "Life, Time "
